Here’s a video of Grace (4 yrs old) in her first ever ballet recital. It’s rather charming. Enjoy.

Gettysburg Address

Posted in The Boys by Thad Noyes on 28 March, 2011

Brennan recently completed a study of the U.S. civil war. Today, he delivered the Gettysburg Address to a small group of people at our church. Three veterans were present. Sorry, but it is a little bit hard to hear.

Lake City (5): Animas Forks Ghost Town

Posted in The Boys, The Outdoors by Thad Noyes on 19 December, 2010

As part of the jeep ride around the Alpine Loop, we dropped down into a famous Colorado ghost town called Animas Forks. Animas Forks was a thriving mining community in the heart of the San Juan mountains near the end of the 19th century (1875ish). It eventually went bust, leaving a number of old, abandoned homes which are still open for viewing.

Lake City (4): Jeeping

The biggest attraction of the Lake City area is the Alpine Loop. It’s a 65 mile loop along one way shelf roads that take you over two mountain passes. The only access is by a four wheel drive high clearance vehicle, which I surprised the boys with at the end. On our last day, I told them to pack up and get ready to head home. They couldn’t believe it when I rolled into the campsite with a rented Jeep. We spent the whole day on the loop (and hit some nasty weather at the top, which made it a little interesting). The Alpine Loop also drops you down into an old ghost town, which I’ll share next time.

Lake City (3): Campsite

Here are a few more photos from our campsite, which is where we spent most of our time. The boys were totally content to just run around the lake and play in the water. But the best photos are yet to come. Next up: Jeeping and then The Ghost Town.

Lake City (2): The Hike

Posted in The Boys, The Outdoors by Thad Noyes on 16 December, 2010

Lake City is really close to 14er access, but we weren’t quite up for such an adventure. So instead we did some research on other local hiking trails and found one that was just beautiful. It was a place called Cataract Gulch, and it was full of lush green foliage, aspen trees, and water falls. We packed a lunch, and then just started hiking until we felt like turning around.

Lake City (1)

Posted in The Boys, The Outdoors by Thad Noyes on 15 December, 2010

Maybe it’s because the class I’m teaching ended today and I have a little more time? Maybe it’s because the snow this morning already has me wishing for spring? Whatever the reason, I got to looking at some my photos from Lake City and thought I’d share.

At the end of the summer we took a little “boys only” trip to Lake City, which really isn’t a city, but a little town in the San Juan mountains of southwest Colorado. It’s one of Colorado’s best spots that doesn’t have a real “touristy” feel to it.

We spentĀ  7 or 8 days in a tent at a beautiful campground that sat on a lake. Today I thought I’d just share a few of the photos just from our campsite. Over the next few days, I’ll try to post more photos from other adventures we had down there. You can watch the slideshow below, or click the thumbnails beneath it to see larger images.
